ZENONIA 1 Good or Evil: Choices, Endings and How to Switch

The meter

ZENONIA 1 is the only game in the series where good and evil is a gameplay system rather than flavour. It is shown as a purple and orange bar in the stats menu. Story choices and some side quests (the “forbidden love letter” chain is one players cite) push it one way or the other. The dev team kept it unchanged in the Steam restoration.

The choice that decides most of it

In Adonis Forest, early in the game, Vicious of the Dragon Clan is losing a fight to Vague, commander of the Holy Knights.

  • Help Vicious: Vague retreats, Vicious recognises Regret as the baby from TriPalo, and the Guild of Night inducts you. This is the evil path.
  • Let the fight continue: Vague overwhelms Vicious, and you join the Guild of Light. This is the good path.

Steam players report that a mis-input here is easy and that undoing it takes a long stretch of opposite choices. If you care, save before entering the forest.

Pale, the Letter Carrier, Ghost of Ladon, Ladon and Osiris are fought on both paths.

The endings

Both paths end the same way mechanically: Ladon, then Osiris in the Whirl of Despair, then credits, then a reload before the two fights. What differs is the scene. On the good path Lady Charity reveals that Regret’s own power killed Dupre, forgives him and makes him captain of the Holy Knights; Sun and Charity are shown watching over him at the end. On the evil path Regret’s anger turns on the people around him. Two days after launch, 0.7% of Steam players had the good ending and 0.8% the evil one.

Can you switch?

Yes, but slowly. The bar moves with every aligned choice, so a player who helped Vicious by accident can grind it back with good decisions and letters over many hours. Nothing in the Steam version adds a reset item for alignment. Practically: if you are more than a couple of hours past Adonis, finish the path you are on and start a second character for the other ending.
