How the clock works
- The in-game clock runs continuously (day/night cycle is one of the systems the dev team chose to keep). The current time is shown on the HUD next to the sun or moon icon.
- Waiting is free: stand outside the inn and enter when the hour flips. Staying at the inn also restores hunger.
- Each hour is a different stock. Leave and re-enter to refresh the list on the next hour.
Examine Scrolls moved
In the 2009 original, Examine Scrolls were an Item Gal special (2,000 gold each, or 20,000 for ten). On Steam, players in the discussion boards found the Item Gal list without them and their inventories filling with unidentified ? items; one player located the scrolls at the Dark Merchant. Treat that as the current answer and check his Items hour first. The full Item Gal list is on the items page.
Dark Merchant questions
Where do I buy Examine (identification) Scrolls in the Steam version?
From the Dark Merchant during his Items hour. Several Steam discussion threads reported the Item Gal no longer lists them; another player found them on the night merchant. If the Item Gal shows them on your copy, that is a patch, and we will update this page.
What does the Dark Merchant sell?
Unidentified gear from Magic up to Unique tier, at higher prices than normal shops, plus status-healing medicines. It is a gamble: you cannot see the stats until you use an Examine Scroll.
Is the Dark Merchant worth it?
For most of the game, no: monster drops and normal shops keep you geared. Late game, when only Unique or Epic gear moves the needle, he is the one reliable source, especially if you save before buying.
